EDIT : So ... the preview for this video is not so awesome. :( The video looks nothing like the frames pulled from it - something went wrong with the decompression of the frames I suppose. The video itself plays just fine (and is more than a series of diagonal lines) but the preview is unfortunate. Alas!

I'm finally getting that high quality render of Clarity exported, but it turns out that is going to take another 10 hours. In the meantime I thought I'd post an earlier video I did.

In my head (but hopefully a reality before too long) my design entity is called IRIS. I like the imagery of it, it implies perspective and organic beauty. Anyway this was the first part of an animated logo I was creating for the name. I lost the version of the file that included the typographic elements - so I added some depth of field and simplified materials to try to create an interesting render from what I had saved.

This is a fly-by of the entire stage of the animation, and it shows the full process of animating the flower. This was another of those projects where I went for a concept that I had no idea how to execute at the time. I knew I wouldn't be able to animate it by hand or rig it properly, so I decided to try controlled use of modifiers instead. I started with a single flat extruded spline for each of the petals (this can be seen in the top left of the rows) and then layered a series of curvature transforms on top of that. I animated in this fashion as well, adjusting each layer of modifiers separately. Lastly I clustered and animated the pieces relative to each other and then twisted all of those as well.

I spent far longer than I had intended getting the blue effects to work correctly. They still look unnatural but at least it is more aesthetically pleasing than my first attempts. Depth of field is not very intuitive in C4D.
