Description
Here is the second of four character progressions from Memento.
This is Leandre, he is a postal-service/message-carrier in the town. He serves as Juliet's love interest for the course of the story, and ends up being the hero of the day.
Here he is depicted at ages 1 - 12 - 19 - 26 - 75. In the comic he will be 23, but his character will most closely resemble the version seen at 19 (with the same wistful personality). I first drew the 26 year version, as that was what I was planning to use in the comic, but there was a confidence in the stance that didn't quite fit with the persona I needed for the story. The bicycles were fun, I sort of made up the structure based on what I could remember. There is something undeniably sweet about aging my characters, so I had a lot of fun with the 75 year old depiction. I wanted him to be supporting himself with something, and decided that a camera tripod would fit the purpose. The Camera is a Kodak Collapsable Bellows (Pocket) - very antique but very classic.
Two more characters to go.
The first growth chart, for Juliet, can be seen at MEM : Juliet - Growth Chart.
Everything in this sketch was unreferenced. Inspirations for the aesthetic and character were Manech (portrayed by Gaspard Ulliel) from "A Very Long Engagement", Sylvain Chomet's "The Triplets of Belleville", and "The Ride" by Rodolphe Guenoden (from "Flight Vol. 2").
Tools :
1. 0.3 mech pencil (HB)
2. Sakura micron 01 (Black)
3. 9" × 12" Strathmore Layout Bond (15 lb)
4. Wacom BAMBOO (Pen)
5. Adobe Photoshop CS5
Music : "Graveyard" - Lucy Schwartz
Time : 3.5 hr (Sketch) 2.5 hr (Paint) 30 min (Crop)
