Description
Well - times have been a'changing so it seems like a self-portrait is the best way to start a new chapter.
This was completed about a month ago as homework for a figure drawing class I took at Cornish. I was crouched on the floor with my array of mirrors to draw a self-profile view (which was a bit intense, since you are so close to the reflection if you move even a little bit - which you have to to see your page - it totally changes the perspective), huddled with my tiny 0.3 mech pencil making very big drawings - this is how it goes. Pretty pleased with how it turned out - the likeness loses itself around the very bottom of the chin, and they eye is in a slightly different perspective (more 3/4) than the rest of the image, but the glasses cutting across the plane of the face went pretty well.
The tonality is so-so, contrast very localized. I decided to leave it very rough as it represents the initial "fleshing-out" of a new identity. Everything is fledgeling. A long way to go.
If you zoom way in, you can see a little bit about my working process. I start out with simple placement points to provide a framework for the overall proportions - then I go into abstract light/shadow shapes - lastly I fill in hatched tone in all those shapes.
This was one of the pieces I put up for my final crit. in that class!
Comments/Critiques greatly appreciated.
